It never fails. You're taking your dog for a walk, and the usually cute canine finds the murkiest, muddiest, nastiest puddle to take a dip. It's fun for the dog, but not for the furniture when you return home.
Now's your chance to let your dog swim a few laps in an environment clean enough for you and the kids.
The Aspen Recreation Center is hosting its first ever Doggy Day at the Pool.
Dogs in the pool? Won't they have to drain it?
Yes, actually, they will.
But the staff at the rec center is preparing to close the pool for a week to drain it anyway, so they decided the timing was right to invite the pooches to the pool.
"This is an opportunity for the dogs to get in the water where there are no health concerns," said Frank Aranella, a guest specialist at the rec center.
Since it's the first time the pool has held the event, the staff isn't planning any formal events for the dogs, but Aranella speculated some casual competition might take place, such as a longest jump contest or fetching for the fastest time. The staff will, however, have plenty of balls and treats on hand.
And if you don't have a dog but want to take part anyway, the animal shelter will be there with "demo dogs," ownerless dogs waiting to be adopted. You might even come away with a new best friend.
The fee is $5 per dog, all dogs must have proof of shots before they can take a swim and they must be licensed.
If you haven't licensed your dog, Doggy Day at the Pool is an opportunity to comply with the law.
City officials will be on hand at the rec center to license dogs for $14.50 (proof of shots required). County officials won't be there in person, but they will have forms on hand (proof of current rabies shot required). You can leave a check, and the county will mail your dog's license to you. The fee is $6 for spayed or neutered dogs, $16 for "intact" dogs.
Both the city and the county require that dogs be licensed. The city requires that all dogs always have a collar with licensing tags and a personal tag with a contact phone number, as well as a leash.
You can get a license for your dog at the police or sheriff's departments at the county courthouse at Main and Galena streets, and several area veterinarians offer licensing as well, so be sure to ask at the vet. If you're licensing your dog in the city, you do not need a duplicate license with the county.
If the rec center's first doggy day is a success, it might become an annual event. The Basalt pool has sponsored doggy days in the past that have been popular, as has Carbondale, which is also hosting a doggy day from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. today. The fee in Carbondale is also $5, and dogs at that pool must be licensed and leashed and have proof of shots. The Carbondale pool will not offer licensing on site.
