Aspen Socialite fires accused yoga instructor

Denise Rich, who owns a mansion on Red Mountain, has parted ways with her yoga instructor after the instructor’s girlfriend accused him of abusing her and holding her captive for three days in Rich’s home.

Jules Paxton was arrested Sunday and charged with third-degree assault and criminal mischief. He alleged Wednesday that his girlfriend suffers from a variety of psychological problems and that her allegations came in during a bipolar episode.

A statement yesterday from Rich’s publicist, Kieron Kawall, said: “Denise Rich was shocked when she saw the front-page article that appeared in The Aspen Times on Jan. 12 containing allegations made against Jules Paxton. Ms. Rich has decided to discontinue his services as her yoga instructor.

“Ms. Rich is well known for her generosity and from time to time she has allowed certain close friends and members of her staff the use of her homes. I can confirm that at the time of the alleged incident during the week of Thanksgiving, Ms. Rich was traveling abroad.”

Paxton said he will plead not guilty.

Wintersköl: Recognize the parade marshal?

Actor and part-time Aspen resident Antonio Banderas has been named the parade marshal for Saturday’s Wintersköl parade.

Banderas is making one of the most popular aspects of the 54th annual celebration of winter possible this year, donating an undisclosed sum to co-sponsor Saturday night’s fireworks celebration. According to the Aspen Chamber Resort Association, which puts on the weekend activities, Banderas’ new fragrance for men, called Spirit Antonio Banderas, is a presenting sponsor of the fireworks show, scheduled for 8:15 p.m.

At 8 p.m. Banderas is also leading the torchlight descent of the Little Nell run down Aspen Mountain. He’ll be joined by “little buddies” from the Buddy Program.

At 1 p.m. on Saturday, the Winterköl Parade kicks off with Banderas leading the charge, most likely riding in a Porsche, since the upscale sportscar company is one of Wintersköl’s sponsors, according to ACRA.

Aspen: Shovel the walk!

The city is reminding folks that sidewalks are required by law to be cleared of snow and ice in a timely manner.

According to the municipal code, “Every person in charge of any building or land within the city fronting or abutting a sidewalk area, shall remove snow and ice at least five feet in width from said building or lot of land.

“Such snow and ice shall be removed from all sidewalk areas within the city on the same day as cessation of any fall of snow, sleet, or freezing rain or within the first three hours of daylight after the cessation of any such fall, whichever period is longer.”

In addition, depositing snow and ice on fire hydrants, sidewalks, roads and loading areas is prohibited.
